IN THE BEGINNING:

My Grandfather who established this business and who was a Master Mechanic began to bring me to his workplace when I was 8 Years old. At that time he began teaching me how to sweep the floor, be quiet and watch what was going on! The biggest job I can remember at that time was how to sweep the concrete floor and not leave any dust trail marks. ?God Forbid? Get the Idea here Oh Boy!

58 Years ago most everything was rebuilt not replaced. He taught me to Rebuild Starters, Generators, Machine Armateurs, Rebuild and Busch Distributors, Rebuild Carburetors, make gaskets when not available, pour and scrape Babbit Bearings, (Now a Lost Art), disassemble Engines, clean and go thru a complete rebuild process.

Then there was the art of welding, Brazing, Soldering, Tinting and Leading another Lost Art. Of course body work was also done at My Grandfathers Shop, so this was another learning curve at 12 years old. I learned quickly that if you had a good Devilbiss Spray gun with an Enamel & Lacquer Nozzle you were good to go except for the experience. At 13 Years old I finished the body and Lacquer Job on my 55 Chevy that is still here today with the same Paint job!

As time went on I began to branch out and experiment with different engine applications, developing tooling not available at the time to do what I thought to be necessary to build more Quality Assemblies. In addition to all of the above experience Engineering, Designing, Drafting, Programming & Cad/Cam can be added.

South State Speed actually began in 1963, however the name wasn?t registered until 1966. I can still remember having family members tow my 55 Chevy Race Car to the track because I was too young to have a License to drive on the street. When I got to the track ~ that was a different story! By 1969 we were sponsoring 8 Cars from AA/FA, AA/FC to SS/NA all of which were top contenders and four of those set Records. I was driving a funny Car myself at that time.
